Lot 240

Description

Pierre Édouard Frère,
French 1819-1886-

A young boy building a house of cards in the artist's studio;

oil on panel, signed and dated 'Édouard Frère 1867' (lower left), bears old hand-written label inscribed with a quote from Ruskin attached to the reverse, 25 x 20 cm.

Provenance:
with Mitchell Galleries, St James's, London.
where purchased in 1954.

Note:
The note attached to the reverse recalls John Ruskin's (1819-1900) praise of Frère, reading: 'I cannot tell how I am ever to say what / I want to say about Frere's pictures. / I can find no words tender enough / nor reverent enough. / They are all beauty without conscious- / ness, dignity without pride lowliness / without sorrow and religious without / fear / (Ruskin)'.

Frère attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and studied under Paul Delaroche (1797-1856). Small-scale and intimate interior scenes like the present work are characteristic of his oeuvre, with his depiction of children imparting such works with a sense of innocence and sweetness which renders them particularly endearing.
