Lot 317

Description

Circle of John Atkinson Grimshaw,
British 1836-1893-

Moonlit street scene, by a port;

oil on canvas, bears signature and date 'Atkinson Grimshaw 89' (lower left), 40.8 x 61.2 cm., (unframed).

Provenance:
Private Collection, Ireland.

Note:
The present work is clearly heavily inspired by the paintings of Grimshaw, who was known for his eerie and evocative nocturnal scenes. Grimshaw produced a number of compositions which are particularly similar to this oil, although the locations often vary between the docks of Glasgow and those of Liverpool, with the colonnaded portico, as seen in the left of the present work, sometimes designated as Liverpool's Customs House. A particularly similar composition was offered at Christie's, London, on 11 December 2018 (lot 161). The present work is highly atmospheric, with a sense of damp from recent rainfall conveyed by the glimmering reflections on the ground below, and a ghostliness created by the silhouetted figures which populate the streets.

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

VAT
VAT is not charged on the hammer price unless it is stated that there is 'VAT applicable on the hammer price at the end of the description. Buyer's premium is subject to VAT.
