Description
Circle of Daniel Rabel,
French 1578-1637-
Two Costume designs;
each black chalk, pen and ink, and watercolour on paper, each indistinctly inscribed, one 30.8 x 19.9 cm., the other 30 x 20.1 cm., two (2).
Note:
The present drawings are heavily reminiscent of the work of Rabel, who worked as a set and costume designer for theatre and ballet at the French court from 1617 to 1637. In this capacity, he created designs for a number of ballets performed at the court of Louis XIII of France, including 'Ballet des fées des forêts de Saint-Germain' (first performed in 1625) and 'Ballet royal du grand bal de la douairière de Billebahaut' (first performed in 1626). Rabel worked very much in the grotesque tradition, influenced by the caricatures of Hans Weiditz (1495-c.1537) and the works of the printmaker Peter Flötner (c.1490-1546).
