Lot 156

Description

George William Mote,
British 1832-1909-

Landscape with a flock of sheep and two donkeys on Ewehurst Common;

oil on canvas, signed 'G.W. Mote', 50.9 x 76.7 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Mote was a largely self-taught artist, who often worked under the patronage of the book collector and antiquarian Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872). Phillipps allowed Mote and his wife to live in Broadway Tower, a folly in the Worcestershire countryside, which he owned, and which commanded sweeping views of the surrounding Cotswolds, a landscape which clearly served as inspiration for the Mote.

Mote began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1857, thereafter exhibiting regularly there and at the Suffolk Street Galleries.
