Description
Alfred Wordsworth Thompson,
American 1840-1896-
Landscape with two figures collecting water from a stream, a cottage beyond;
oil on canvas, 30.5 x 25.5 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Thompson initially worked as an illustrator, producing work for publications such as 'Harper's Weekly' and the 'Illustrated London News', including a portrait of the abolitionist John Brown (1800-1859). Thompson then travelled to Paris, enrolling in the École des Beaux-Arts in 1864, where he studied alongside Alberto Pasini (1826-1899), Émile Lambinet (1813-1877), and Charles Gleyre (1806-1874). He was a highly versatile artist with a varied oeuvre, producing a number of historical scenes - exhibiting over 40 paintings of the American Revolutionary War at the National Academy of Design over the course of his career - as well as charming landscapes, like the present work.
