Description
Circle of Domenico Mondo,
Italian 1723-1806-
Madonna and Child with Saints;
oil on canvas, 33.3 x 23 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work recalls the approach of the Neapolitan artist Mondo, who was himself heavily influenced by Francesco Solimena (1657-1747), a key proponent of Baroque painting under whom Mondo studied. The present work exhibits the sharp 'chiaraoscuro' and contrasts of colours which characterise Mondo's approach, somewhat simplifying the composition, and thereby highlighting the forms of the figures and their draperies. The dramatic composition, with the Virgin and Child seated on clouds and surrounded by reverent saints, also reflects the influence of Mondo.
In the present scene, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, to the right of the composition, is recognisable by the palm frond which she clasps, whilst Saint Joseph with his staff is visible on the opposite side. The saint in the brown habit at the Virgin's feet to the left is possibly Saint Francis, whilst the figure in the black habit resembles some depictions of Saint Benedict. The artist has also placed a skull at the lower edge of the work, reminding the viewer of the constant presence of death, and therefore allowing the work to function also as a memento mori, in part.
