Lot 237

Description

After Eugène Lejeune,
French 1818-1897-

Childhood pranks;

oil on canvas, signed 'G Medwood' (lower right), 64.5 x 95.4 cm., (unframed).

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present work is a copy after Lejeune's original, which was offered for sale at Bonhams, New York, on 5 November 2014. Lejeune specialised in the production of genre scenes, typically featuring figures in historical or regional dress in idealised rural settings. The present composition exhibits the humour and liveliness of Lejeune's work, convincingly evoking the raucous noise of the scene, with a little boy blowing a horn, a dog barking to the left, and, perhaps most importantly, the figure to the right of the composition who presses her hands to her ears in an attempt to drown out the cacophony.
