Lot 298

Description

George Chinnery,
British 1774-1852-

Two Sketches: Study of two seated figures; and In the Bazaar, Macao;

each pencil, pen and brown ink on paper, each inscribed in the artist's shorthand, the first 9.4 x 10.3 cm., the second 14.4 x 15.5 cm., two (2).

Provenance:
Private collection of Dr John & Mary Esther O'Driscoll, Kildare, Ireland;
thence by descent to the present owners.

Note:
The present works are characteristic studies by Chinnery, who, as the only western painter in South China in the early to mid 19th century, produced works which are of significant historical interest. Chinnery was based in Macau from 1825 until his death in 1852, making regular visits to Canton (now Guangzhou) until 1832.

These sketches depict figures and scenes that Chinnery encountered during his time in China. One is a snapshot of two figures, possibly haggling, at a market stall at a bazaar in Macau, whilst another appears to depict two seated men playing a game, although their specific actions are tantalisingly obscured from view. This composition reinforces Chinnery's role as an outside observer, documenting the lifestyle and customs of early 19th-century China as he experienced them with a striking immediacy.
