Lot 220

Description

After Sir Edwin Henry Landseer,
British 1802-1873-

Retriever with a Woodcock;

oil on canvas, signed and dated 'G Stubbs / 1913' (lower left), bears inscription and date 'P Stubbs / 1913' on the canvas at the right vertical stretcher bar, 30.7 x 25.6 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present work is an early 20th-century copy after Landseer's painting, which was commissioned by William Wells of Redleaf (1768-1847), one of Landseer's most important patrons, and which was exhibited in Landseer's 1874 Memorial Exhibition at the Royal Academy. In the present work, the artist has successfully captured the imploring look of the retriever which is faithful to Landseer's original.
