Lot 113

Description

Circle of Sir Francis Grant, PRA,
British 1803-1878-

Portrait of a gentleman, full-length, seated in an interior with a landscape beyond;

oil on canvas, 122 x 79 cm.

Provenance:
The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson.

Note:
The sitter of the present work is unknown, however, the spine of the book which rests on the floor, and which reads 'LEX CORONATIA', suggests that he may be a coroner, an official who is empowered to conduct or order an inquest into any death which there is reason to believe may not be due to natural causes. The sitter would, therefore, be a figure of some authority amongst his contemporaries, with his high social standing further suggested by the grand interior in which he sits, whilst the globe beside him hints towards his erudition and worldliness

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

VAT
VAT is not charged on the hammer price unless it is stated that there is 'VAT applicable on the hammer price at the end of the description. Buyer's premium is subject to VAT.
