Lot 22

Description

After Hieronymus Bosch,
Flemish c.1450-1516-

The Temptation of St. Anthony;

oil on canvas, 61 x 54.5 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection.

Note:
The present work is a copy after the central panel in Bosch's original triptych, which dates from c.1501, and is held in the collection of the Museu Nacional de Arte Antica in Lisbon. Bosch's composition depicts the various mental and physical trials of St Anthony Abbot (c.251-356 AD), also known as Anthony the Great, one of the most important 'Desert Fathers' of the late 3rd- and early 4th-century Egypt who has been credited as a significant figure in the development of Christian monasticism. The typically fantastical and surreal composition of the present work powerfully conveys a sense of the tumult endured by St Anthony.

Bosch's original was widely copied, with early versions held in a number of museums, including the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels, and the Prado Museum in Madrid.
