Lot 109

Description

William Hogarth, FRSA,
British 1697-1764-

The Four Stages of Cruelty;

etchings, published 1 February 1751, 38.3 x 32.3 cm., four (4).

Provenance:
Anon. sale, Christie's South Kensington, 7 December 2011, lot 75.
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The 'Four Stages of Cruelty' depict different episodes in the life of the fictional Tom Nero, who commits worsening acts of cruelty from the 'First Stage of Cruelty' through to 'Cruelty in Perfection', culminating in 'The Reward of Cruelty', in which Nero receives the inevitable punishment for his actions. These prints are highly detailed, dense with a wealth of references as is typical of Hogarth's work, and are clear in their moral instruction.
