Lot 112

Description

After William Hogarth, FRSA,
British 1697-1764-

Marriage à-la-Mode;

mezzotints, engraved by Richard Earlom (1743-1822), published 1 August 1800 by J & J Boydell, London, 52.2 x 64 cm., six (6).

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Hogarth's series of 'Marriage à-la-Mode' is one of his best-known cautionary tales, telling the story of an ill-considered marriage arranged by two self-seeking fathers, an impoverished nobleman in need of money, and a wealthy City of London merchant looking for an entrance into the aristocracy. Hogarth's prints form a biting satire of the greed and self-absorption of the wealthy elites of 18th-century society. The original set of paintings was produced in 1743, from which subsequent prints were made.
