Note:
'A Harlot's Progress' is a seminal work of the 18th century, with this cautionary tale of the downfall of Moll Hackabout, a fictional harlot, becoming Hogarth's most famous work. The original series of six paintings (now destroyed) was executed in 1731, with a corresponding set of prints produced in 1732, illustrating Moll's life, from her arrival into London from the country, through to her work as a prostitute, her imprisonment in Bridewell Prison, and her eventual death from syphilis at the age of 23. The title recalls John Bunyan's (1628-1688) 'Pilgrim's Progress', a 1678 publication which 18th-century contemporaries would have been very aware of.
