Lot 314

Description

Arthur Hacker, RA,
British 1858-1919-

The Winter is Past;

pencil and watercolour heightened with white on paper laid down on board, signed 'A Hacker RA' and titled 'The Winter is Past' on the reverse of the backing board, 27.7 x 31.6 cm.; together with a watercolour of two doves before a rose bush by another hand, 14.6 x 15.5 cm., two (2).

Provenance:
The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson.

Note:
Hacker studied at the Royal Academy, and at the Atelier Bonnat in Paris. His paintings reveal a preoccupation with mythological and allegorical scenes, which make up the majority of his output. The present work appears to depict some form of bacchanal, with swirling figures in classical dress dancing and playing pipes. Hacker's drawing is redolent with a sense of dreaminess, with his loose pencilwork and rounded forms imparting the work with a feeling of fluidity and movement.
