Description
David Cox, OWS,
British 1783-1859-
Returning from Hawking, Haddon Hall;
pencil and watercolour heightened with scratching out on paper, 20.6 x 31 cm.
Provenance:
with The Fine Art Society Ltd., London.
Private Collection, UK.
Exhibited:
London, The Fine Art Society, May 1938, no.68.
Note:
David Cox studied under John Varley (1778-1842), and was clearly heavily influenced by the latter's approach, becoming, like Varley, one of the most significant British watercolourists of his time and beyond. He was also a major figure in the Birmingham School of landscape artists, alongside Thomas Baker (1809-1864) and Thomas Creswick (1811-1869).
The present work depicts figures on horseback in what appears to be Tudor dress, in an imagined historical scene at Haddon Hall in Derbyshire, which is visible in the distance. This work exhibits the characteristic loose style which imparts Cox's works with a sense of freshness and vitality.
