Lot 119

Description

Circle of John E. Ferneley, Senior,
British 1782-1860-

Portrait of a young man, seated three-quarter length, in a landscape, holding an open book in his left hand;

oil on canvas, 53.5 x 47.6 cm.

Provenance:
Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 26 October 1990, lot 212.
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present portrait is a particularly charming work, with the sitter leaning on a table, smartly dressed in a suit with a pristine white collar, and engaged in the decidedly intellectual pursuit of reading, situated somewhat improbably in a presumably muddy woodland setting. It is very much reminiscent of portraits by John Ferneley Senior who studied under the sporting artist Benjamin Marshall (1768-1835) and who counted amongst his patrons some of the most prominent and fashionable society figures of the time, including Beau Brummell (1778-1840) and the Comte d'Orsay (1748-1809).

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

VAT
VAT is not charged on the hammer price unless it is stated that there is 'VAT applicable on the hammer price at the end of the description. Buyer's premium is subject to VAT.
