Lot 318

Description

William Richardson,
British 1814-1899-

The Five Sisters Window, York Minster;

oil on board, signed, titled, and inscribed 'The Five Sisters at York / Willm Richardson / 38a Edward Street / Hampstead Road' verso, 33.6 x 25.3 cm.

Provenance:
The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson.

Note:
Richardson worked as an architect and an artist, exhibiting at the Royal Academy between 1842 and 1877. As befits his architectural training, he was principally interested in the depiction of buildings, with his oeuvre consisting largely of paintings of abbeys and ruins, with this Gothic subject-matter imparting his work with a particularly Romantic feel.

The present work depicts the Five Sisters Window in York Minster, which is the only memorial in the country dedicated to all the women from the British Empire who lost their lives in the First World War. The window originally dates to the mid-13th century, but was restored and rededicated in 1923-1925, after the glass was removed during the war to protect it from Zeppelin raids. This oil exhibits a crispness and detail which is consistent with Richardson's wider oeuvre. His use of gold paint is especially striking, lending the painting a luminosity which powerfully evokes the fall of light within the Minster.
