Lot 225

Description

John Trivett Nettleship,
British 1841-1902-

Portrait of a Border Collie in a landscape;

oil on canvas, signed and dated 'J.T. Nettleship 1898' (lower right), bears printed label attached to the reverse of the frame, 45.5 x 60.9 cm.

Provenance:
Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 12 November 1971, lot 191.

Private Collection, Germany.

Note:
Nettleship studied at the Heatherley School of Fine Art and at the Slade School of Fine Art. His daughter, Ida Nettleship (1877-1907) went on to become an artist, and the first wife of the painter Augustus John (1871-1961).

Nettleship is celebrated for his animal paintings, which principally depict wild animals in their natural habitats, including lions, tigers, rhinoceroses and bears. The present work, therefore, is a slightly more unusual work for the artist, although still very much within his specialism, depicting as it does a domesticated Border Collie.
