Description
Georgina Lara,
British fl.1840-1880-
The Wayside Inn;
oil on canvas, signed 'G. Lara' (lower left), further signed, dated, and inscribed 'The Wayside Inn / G. Lara / .1862.' verso, bears number '10081' verso, 23 x 33.2 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Lara's paintings exhibit similarities to those of the 19th-century painter Edward Masters (fl.1860-1880), and, as such, are sometimes attributed to Masters. The present scene is a particularly charming example of Lara's work, which, despite its rural setting, is bustling with figures and animals, drinking, riding, walking, and bartering over fruits and vegetables.
