Lot 309

Description

Louise Jane Jopling, RBA,
British 1843-1933-

Head of a young woman, possibly a self-portrait;

oil on panel, signed 'Louise Jopling' (lower left), backed by a copy of The Times, 8 November 1890, 20.9 x 12.7 cm.

Provenance:
with J.S. Maas & Co., London.
The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson.

Note:
Jopling initially worked as 'Louise Romer', using her first husband's surname, until her marriage to the Vanity Fair artist Joseph Middleton Jopling in 1874, at which point she began to sign her work 'Louise Jopling'.

Jopling travelled to Paris in the 1860s, where she studied under Charles Joshua Chaplin (1825-1891), and later under Alfred Stevens (1823-1906). Jopling enjoyed the support of Baroness Charlotte de Rothschild (1825-1899) and her husband Nathaniel de Rothschild (1812-1870), and was closely associated with some of the most significant figures in 19th-century society, including John Everett Millais (1829-1896), James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), and Oscar Wilde (1854-1900). Alongside Lucy Kemp-Welch (1869-1958), Jopling was elected to the Royal Academy of British Artists in 1902, making them the first women to be allowed access into the institution.
