(the first): Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 27 April 1995, lot 115.

(the second): Anon. sale, Phillips, London, 6 October 1998, lot 296.

Note:
McEvoy studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, having been encouraged to do so by James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), a friend of his father who had spotted McEvoy's talent at a young age. It was at the Slade that McEvoy came into contact with artists including William Orpen (1878-1931), Augustus John (1878-1961), and Gwen John (1876-1939), with whom he had an ill-fated affair.

McEvoy travelled to Dieppe with Walter Sickert (1860-1942) in 1909, and it is presumably from this trip that the present sketch of the town originates. Despite being a highly versatile artist, he became known later in his career for his portraits, with his notably loose approach imparting his subjects with a striking sense of character and presence.
