Lot 193

Description

William Gershom Collingwood,
British 1854-1932-

An Alpine landscape with two buildings;

watercolour heightened with white on paper, signed with initials 'WGC' and indistinctly dated '1908[?]' (lower left), 17.5 x 25.4 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Collingwood studied at Oxford under John Ruskin (1819-1900), whose influence on Collingwood's art and life was immense. Collingwood later moved to the Lake District, close to Ruskin's house at Coniston, and, from 1881, worked as Ruskin's assistant. He also had an academic career, serving as a Professor of Fine Art at University College, Reading, after Ruskin's death.

Collingwood visited Switzerland on multiple occasions, having travelled with his father (also an artist) on sketching trips in his early years, and later accompanying Ruskin. The present work, with smoke rising from the chimney of a cabin perched on the hillside, almost certainly originates from one of these trips.
