Lot 250

Description

L. Candy,
European School, 20th century-

A street scene in Rotterdam with the Church of St Laurens, after Willem Koekkoek;

oil on panel, signed 'L. Candy' (lower right), 29 x 39.6 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present work is a copy after a painting by Willem Koekkoek (1839-1895), which sold at Christie's, London 20 March 1992, lot 7. This is a characteristic example of the street scenes which defined Koekkoek's output, and which set him apart, somewhat, from the rest of his family of artists, which included his grandfather Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek (1778-1851), his father Hermanus Koekkoek (1815-1882), and his brothers Hermanus (1836-1909), Johannes Hermanus Barend (1840-1912), and Hendrick Barend Koekkoek (1849-1909).
