Description
Studio of Miguel Canals,
Spanish 1925-1995-
A sunlit Dutch street scene, after Adrianus Eversen;
oil on panel, bears signature 'A. Evensen.' (lower right), with the artist's studio stamp 'STUDIO M. CANALS' (on the reverse), 53.9 x 39.9 cm.
Provenance:
Anon. Sale, Bonhams, London, 3 December 1996;
where purchased by the brother of the present owner.
Note:
Adriannus Eversen (1818-1897) was a Dutch painter whose distinctive cityscapes depict somewhat imagined settings, rather than the more faithful representations of street scenes produced by contemporaries such as Cornelis Springer (1817-1891). The present scene is characteristic of Eversen's output, and clearly relates to his strikingly similar composition which sold at Sotheby's, Amsterdam,18 October 2005, lot 66.
