Lot 210

Description

Elias Mollineaux Bancroft,
British 1846-1924-

A wooded courtyard with a view through a gate;

bodycolour heightened with gum arabic on paper, signed and dated 'ELIAS BANCROFT 1878.' (lower right), bears old, indistinctly inscribed label attached to the reverse of the frame, 56 x 78 cm.

Provenance:
with Charles Rowley, 5 Barton Square, Manchester.
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Bancroft studied at the Royal College of Art. He later taught at the Manchester School of Art and served as President of the Manchester Academy of Fine Art. He was married to the artist Louisa Mary Bancroft (1864-1948), also a successful artist, best-known for her floral still lifes.

Elias Bancroft's landscapes were often depicted from a close, restricted viewpoint, creating a momentary snapshot down a narrow alleyway or an open door. The present work is a particularly charming example of this approach, with the open gate at the centre of the composition offering a glimpse out of the enclosed courtyard into the open landscape which expands beyond.

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

VAT
VAT is not charged on the hammer price unless it is stated that there is 'VAT applicable on the hammer price at the end of the description. Buyer's premium is subject to VAT.
