Lot 181

Description

Patrick Nasmyth,
Scottish 1787-1831-

A rural landscape with cottages and a figure walking along a path;

oil on panel, signed 'Patk Nasmyth' (lower right), bears an old inscribed label on the reverse of the frame, 20.5 x 24.8 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Much of Nasmyth's work, a great deal of which is undated, depicts his native Scotland, which he continued to paint even after moving to London in 1810. Like his father, Alexander Nasmyth (1758-1840), he was heavily influenced by the Dutch masters of the 17th century, particularly Meindert Hobbema (c.1638-1709) and Jacob van Ruysdael (c.1629-1682), and indeed a large number of works by both artists were displayed in London galleries during Nasmyth's lifetime. As a teenager Nasmyth lost the use of his right hand following an accident, forcing him to learn how to paint with his left.
