Lot 185

Description

After John Constable, RA,
British 1776-1837-

Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows;

oil on panel, bears old label inscribed 'Sketch of Salisbury / Cathedral / attributed to / John Constable' verso, bears remnants of an older, indistinctly inscribed label verso, 20.3 x 25.2 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present work is a copy after, presumably, a sketch for Constable's iconic 1831 painting 'Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows' (G. Reynolds, The Later Paintings and Drawings of John Constable, no.795), the latter of which is currently on display in the Tate Britain [T13896]. Whilst this smaller work does not include the rainbow which stretches across Constable's masterpiece, it does feature the same dramatic, swirling dark clouds which, in the Tate's painting, are typically interpreted as an expression of the artist's emotional turmoil following the death of his wife Maria, three years previously. In Constable's final painting, he has also replaced the fisherman sitting serenely on the riverbank with a figure in his cart, pulled through the river by two horses.
