Description
Hendrik Heyligers,
Dutch 1877-1967-
Portrait of Diane Stafford Myburgh;
oil on canvas, signed 'H. Heyligers' (lower left), 92.5 x 73.3 cm. ARR.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Diane Stafford Myburgh (1920-?) was the step-daughter of Patrick Vanden-Temple-Johnson (1901-1986), 4th Baron Derwent, and a minister in the governments of Harold Macmillan (1894-1986) and Alec Douglas-Home (1903-1995).
Heyligers was best-known for his genre paintings, often depicting peaceful, highly-romanticised maternal scenes which can be compared to those of his contemporary, Bernard Pothast (1882-1966). The present work is a finely executed portrait by the artist and exhibits the same softly-blended brushstrokes which define his technical approach.
