Lot 79

Eduardo León Garrido,
Spanish 1856-1949-

The Boating Party;

oil on canvas, signed 'E L Garrido' (lower left), 58.5 x 81.5 cm.

Private Collection, UK.

Garrido's output is defined by his elaborate genre scenes, depicting figures in extravagant historical dress, typically dancing, making music, or preparing for a ball. The present work is an especially charming example of his work, revealing striking similarities to the fête galante scenes of French Rococo artists Jean-Antoine Watteau (1604-1721) and François Boucher (1703-1770).

Garrido studied at the Escuela Especial de Pintura in Madrid, after which he worked in the studio of Vicente Palmaroli (1834-1896), whose elegant and ornate genre scenes undoubtedly influenced his own work. Garrido's paintings also hint towards the influence of artists such as Raimundo Madrazo (1841-1920) and Marià Fortuny (1838-1874), whom he met over the course of his career. Garrido travelled widely, visiting the United States in 1896, where his work enjoyed considerable success, before settling in France, teaching at the School of Arts and Crafts in Varennes-sur-Allier in 1905.
