Description

Domenico Amici,
Italian 1808-1870/71-

Four Views of Rome: Arco di Tito; Piazza del Popolo; Fontana di Trevi; and Veduta del Campidoglio;

engravings, each signed 'Domenico Amici' (within the plates, lower left), titled, and dated '1832', '1835', '1835' and '1837' respectively (within the plates, lower right), each 17 x 23.5 cm., four (4).

Note:
Amici was inspired to some extent by the etchings of Rome's historic monuments by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778). The present engravings depict Roman landmarks, such as the instantly recognisable Trevi Fountain, constructed in the 18th century, and the Arch of Titus, a 1st-century arch constructed by the Emperor Domitian in AD 81 in honour of his older brother Titus, and located on the Via Sacra. The other views include the Capitoline Square, at the top of the Capitoline Hill, with a piazza designed by Michelangelo (1475-1564) in 1536-46, and the Piazza del Popolo, a large, well-known square in Rome.
