Lot 103

Description

Charles Edward Dixon, RI,
British 1872-1934-

On the Thames;

watercolour heightened with white on paper, signed and dated 'Charles Dixon / 1891.' (lower right), 24.7 x 52.5 cm.

Provenance:
with Haynes Fine Art of Broadway, Worcestershire, no.8275.
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Charles Edward Dixon was the son of the genre painter Alfred Dixon (1842-1919). He worked principally as a marine artist, with many of his works now held in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, and also produced a number of illustrations for publications which included the Illustrated London News, the Graphic, and the Sphere. The present work effectively conveys the traffic and bustle of the River Thames towards the end of the 19th century, when it was still central to the transportation of goods across London and further afield.
