Description
William Ward,
British 1829-1908-
Château and Cathedral at Nantes, after Joseph Mallord William Turner, RA;
pen, brown ink, and watercolour heightened with touches of bodycolour on blue paper, inscribed in John Ruskin's hand 'Nantes / By Wm Ward. after Turner / J. Ruskin' and 'Excellent', verso (lower edge), 16.5 x 22 cm.
Provenance:
Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 29 April 1987, lot 82.
Private Collection, UK.
Exhibited:
Oxford, Corpus Christi College, 'Ruskin Exhibition', November 1970, no.57.
Note:
The present work is a copy after a watercolour by J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851) of similar dimensions, which Turner executed after his visit to Nantes in 1826, and which is held in the Tate Galleries, London [D24657]. Ward was a friend and pupil of John Ruskin (1819-1900) and was encouraged by Ruskin to make copies after works by J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851). Indeed, Ruskin's presence is very much felt in the present work, which bears his annotation and praise 'Excellent'.
