Lot 180

Description

Edward Lear,
British 1812-1888-

A Farmstead;

pencil and brown wash on paper, inscribed with colour annotations, 24 x 32.5 cm.

Provenance:
Anon. sale, Phillips, London, 8 October 1990, lot 89.
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Lear was one of the leading and most prolific English illustrators of the 19th century. He worked largely as a landscape painter and watercolourist, depicting the varied landscapes he encountered on his extensive travels over the course of his career, which encompassed the Mediterranean, Egypt, and India.

The present work is a charming sketch of a farmstead, occupied by chickens, a horse, a dog which rests its head sweetly on the ground to the far right of the sheet, and a figure, who may well be the farmer. Lear's striking technique, with the contrast of the brown wash against the plain, undefined background, imparts the work with a sketchy quality which suggests that it was drawn on the spot.
