Lot 300

Description

Attributed to Florence Blakiston Attwood Mathews,
British 1842-1923-

Street scene in Egypt;

watercolour heightened with white on card, inscribed 'Sunset, Cairo in Ramadan' verso, 53.8 x 28.5 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Mathews was the second daughter of British writer and doctor James John Garth Wilkinson (1812-1899), and produced sketchbooks documenting her travels through Egypt and Sudan in the late 19th and early 20th century. As seen in the present work, her depiction of light is particularly evocative, with the warm lamp light visible from the windows mirrored by the pinky hue of the setting sun in the distance, and illuminating the silhouette of the two pyramids on the horizon.
