Lot 251

Description

William Raymond Dommersen,
British 1850-1927-

Utrecht, Holland;

oil on canvas, signed 'WR Dommersen' (lower right), titled and inscribed with initials 'Uthrecth [sic.] / Holland / WR' verso, 46.3 x 36 cm.

Provenance:
Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 21 January 2015 (£1,375).
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
William Raymond Dommersen was the son of the painter Pieter Cornelis Dommersen (1833-1918), and nephew of Cornelis Christiaan Dommersen (1842-1928), also a painter. His output consists almost exclusively of landscapes and marine scenes, the compositions of which, with low, flat horizons punctuated by buildings of an unmistakably Netherlandish appearance, gesture towards the strong influence of earlier Dutch landscape artists such as Jacob van Ruisdael (1628-1682) and Jan van Goyen (1596-1656). The present work, depicting a river scene in the Dutch city of Utrecht, was certainly informed by one of Dommersen's many trips to the Netherlands over the course of his life. Dommersen's works can be found in collections across the UK, including at Pembroke College, Cambridge, and the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle.
