Lot 38

Description

A pair of Chinese wucai baluster jars

Transitional period, circa 1640

The thickly-potted bodies painted in underglaze blue and enamelled in iron-red, green, yellow and aubergine, with pheasants and magpies in a garden of large-headed peonies and chrysanthemums issuing from craggy rocks, the bases left unglazed.

18cm high (2).

轉變期約一六四零 五彩繪錦雞花鳥圖紋對罐

The decoration on the present lot heavily takes inspiration from the painterly subject of 'birds and flowers', which had become hugely popular since the Song dynasty.

Pairs of birds generally symbolise marital harmony and happiness. Called jinji ( 锦鸡) in Chinese, sounding like 'gold and auspiciousness' (金吉) pheasants were considered very auspicious birds, often believed to have the ability to dispel evil spirits. Magpies, also generally shown in pairs, are considered a messenger of joy and marital happiness.

Chrysanthemum, beautiful and colourful, represents autumn. As it blooms in autumn when all other flowers are fading away, it symbolises the ability to withstand adversity. It is tranquil and harmonious with others, but also dignified and indomitable.

A flower native of China and cultivated for centuries, symbolising wealth, honour, peace, royalty, masculinity and also feminine beauty, peonies have long been beloved by Chinese people. They are known to have been grown in royal gardens since the Tang and Sui dynasties at least, thus becoming known as ‘the King of flowers’.
