清晚期約一九零零 銀竹紋茶具三件套,「九江涂茂興」款
Bamboo symbolises many virtues of a scholar in Chinese traditional culture. It represents honesty, humility, and loyalty. Traditionally it is a symbol of strength, both physical and mental, as it stands erect, but in the strongest of gales it bends and sways, but will not break; for this reason, it can also represent longevity. Its hollow trunk is also considered a symbol of humility. The word 'bamboo' (zhu 竹) in Chinese is a homophone with the word 'to wish' (zhu 祝), making bamboo a rebus for blessings.
Bamboo is part of two of the most symbolically important groupings of plants within Chinese art: the ‘four gentlemen’, together with prunus, orchid and chrysanthemum, where it represents summer; and the ‘Three Friends of Winter’, together with prunus and pine, another evergreen.
