Lot 372

Description

A rare monumental brass padlock and keys, Persia, 18th century or later, of curvilinear waisted form with a large rounded handle, standing on a flared rectangular base, maker's stamps to lock cover and handle, the face with a band of engraved floral interlace tracing the form of the lock, raised ridged domes the the foot and edge of the front and back, the two large openwork brass keys inserting into a central fitting, a third key inserted to side, 52.5 high x 32cm. diam.

Monumental padlocks from the Islamic world are rare and have been little studied. One other example very similar to ours is illustrated in The Noble Hand, exhibition catalogue, Momtaz Islamic Art, London 2017, no. 40, and is dated to 1730. Both examples were likely used on monumental gates.

For a general discussion of locks see James Allan, "Metalwork of the Turcoman Dynasties of Eastern Anatolia and Iran," British Institute of Persian Studies, 1991, pp. 153-9.
