Lot Footnotes
Monumental padlocks from the Islamic world are rare and have been little studied. One other example very similar to ours is illustrated in The Noble Hand, exhibition catalogue, Momtaz Islamic Art, London 2017, no. 40, and is dated to 1730. Both examples were likely used on monumental gates.
For a general discussion of locks see James Allan, "Metalwork of the Turcoman Dynasties of Eastern Anatolia and Iran," British Institute of Persian Studies, 1991, pp. 153-9.
