Lot 164

Description

An official fascimile edition of the Ottoman Qur'an presented to Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent by Ahmad Karahisari (1468-69-circa 1565AD) in 953AH/1546AD, Fideuart Edizione d'Arte, 1980, one of only 1500 copies produced to commemorate the new Hegira century and the announcement of the construction of the first Mosque in Rome, with original certificate and in goatskin cover, with a letter dated 27 June, 1980 from Khaled Nasser al Torki, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Rome addressed to Dr. D. Rigano expressing thanks on behalf of H.M. King Khaled ibn Abdul Aziz and H.R.H. Prince Fahd ibn Abdul Aziz for the gift of a copy of the Qur'an, 33.5 x 22cm.

The 1500 copies were distributed partially upon the new Hegira and laying on the last stone of the Mosque in Rome with a number of copies held back for distribution upon its completion in 1994, of which this is one.

The paper was chosen to replicate exactly the thickness, texture and colour of the original and the binding was hand made of the same blind-tooled goatskin as the original in the Topkapi Museum.

Ahmed Şemseddîn’dir, known as Karahisari after his place of birth, Karahisar, served in the Imperial Court of Suleyman I. In terms of the technique and innovations made to the calligraphy, he is considered one of the three most important Ottoman calligraphers along with Sheikh Hamdullah and Hâfiz Osman. Some of the most impressive of the Mus'hafs prepared in the Ottoman Palace Studios have been attributed to Ahmed Karahisari. His most important work is the Mus'haf which he penned for Suleiman the Magnificent (reigned 1520-1566), which is preserved today at the Topkapi Palace. Other examples of his work are held in the Topkapi Museum and the Museum of Istanbul.
