Lot 442

Description

A Victorian mahogany artist's easel, second half 19th century, with adjustable picture rest and paint box, hinged back-rest, with applied brass plaque EASEL OF DAVID COX, and hand-painted signatures for F.L. Bridell , J. E. Buttersworth and another, 186cm high, 92cm wide

Note: the applied brass plaque could refer to the artists David Cox Senior (1783-1859) or Junior (1809-1885), but mostly likely Junior given the age of the easel.  The additional signatures are for Frederick Lee Bridell (English, 1830-1863) and James Edward Buttersworth (English, 1817-1894). The later specialised in maritime paintings and moved to the United States in 1845.
