Lot 206

Description

A Meissen porcelain figural group of Empress Elizabeth of Russia, early 20th century, blue crossed swords mark, impressed no. 1059 and 149, after the model by J.J. Kändler, the Empress modelled astride a rearing white horse, a gilt badge of an Order on her chest and another on her blue sash, a baton in her outstretched right hand, attended by a blackamoor, on an oval grassy base applied with flowers, 24cm high

Note: The military dress, of a colonel of the regiment of the Preobraschenski Guard, was deliberately chosen for the Tsarina, since it was the Preobraschenski Regiment which had supported Elisabeth Petrovna in December 1741 in her putsch against Tsarina Anna Ivanovna and had assisted her in attaining the Imperial Crown. The present lot was modelled after 'Portrait of Tsarina Elisabeth Petrovna on horse' by Georg Christoph Grooth (1716-1749), currently held in the Tretyakov State Gallery in Moscow (museum no. 17035).  For an 18th century model of this group in the State Porcelain Collection, Dresden, see Ulrich Pietsch (Ed.), Meißen für die Zaren, Munich, 2004, p. 57.
