Description
An unusual Chinese Cizhou-type 'lotus' tripod narcissus bowl
Ming dynasty, 15th century
Standing on three small cloud-shaped feet, carved around the exterior with trailing lotuses between a sparse row of bosses at the rim and foot, the centre with a further lotus flowerhead, covered overall in a thick white glaze, with fitted hardwood stand, 31cm diameter.
Provenance: Hazelwood, Shanghai, circa 1930 (by repute).
明十五世紀 磁州窯刻蓮紋三組大盌連木座
來源:Hazelwood,上海,約1930年。(口傳)
Hazelwood is a large classical property in Shanghai designed by Clough Williams-Ellis and is on the site of the now Radisson Xingguo Hotel.
The shape and decoration of this unusual incense burner is generally found in Longquan tripod vessels, and occasionally Junyao tripod vessels of the Ming Dynasty. Cf. a Longquan vessel of similar shape but slightly different decoration, dated to the late Yuan/early Ming in Sotheby's Hong Kong, 01 Jun 2017, lot 562; and a Junyao 'narcissus' bowl early Ming Dynasty, also in Sothebys, London, 11 November 2015, lot 81. There are also Longquan tripod incense burners of this shape, often with carved lotus decoration, however these often have unglazed centres.
