Lot 235

Description

Sir Kyffin Williams OBE RA,
Welsh 1918–2006 -

Glendalough, Co. Wicklow;

oil on board, inscribed with artist's name and title on the reverse, 29.8 x 40.9 cm (ARR)

Provenance:
Mary Ponsonby and thence by descent;
Rogers Jones & Co., Cardiff, 'The Welsh Sale', 23rd March 2019, lot 409;
private collection, purchased from the above

Note:
the work is accompanied by a signed letter from the artist to the original owner with regards to the purchase of this work from the artist's address 11a Holland Villas Rd., W14. The artist lived at this address from c.1960-63. The letter references another similar work purchased from the New Art Centre, London; during this period Williams was regularly exhibiting with Leicester Galleries and Colnaghi's Gallery in London and Howard Roberts Gallery in Cardiff.

This work is an extraordinary insight into the early development of this beloved Welsh artist, demonstrating the confidence of his brushwork and unique understanding of colour. There are nearly 400 works by the artists in public UK collections, mainly in his home country of Wales, most noticeably at the Oriel Kyffin Williams Gallery at Oriel Mons in Anglesey which opened in 2008.
