Description
Joseph Vincent Gibson,
British 1828-1913-
A young girl with a posy;
watercolour and bodycolour heightened with white on paper, signed and dated 'J.V. Gibson / 1878' (lower left), 27.7 x 22.5 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Gibson's pictures were popular amongst contemporaries, and his supporters included Prince Albert (1819-1861), who came across his work during a visit to an exhibition of local artists at Salford Museum in 1857. Gibson exhibited at the Royal Academy six times, between 1862 and 1888. The romantic sentiment of the present work is typical of the artist's oeuvre, with his work often depicting figures in an idealised rural setting, petting animals, or picking flowers.
