Description
William Joseph Shayer,
British 1811-1892-
Mr Richard Sutton's Lord Lyon, H. Custance up winner of The Triple Crown, 1866;
oil on canvas, 36 x 45.8 cm.
Provenance:
with Arthur Ackermann & Son, London.
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
William Joseph Shayer was the son of William Shayer (1787-1879), and, like his father, excelled in the depiction of horses, although his preference was clearly for coaching, hunting, and racing scenes, rather than the pastoral settings in which the elder Shayer specialised. William Joseph Shayer's paintings are part of the genre-defining demand for hunting scenes which developed in 19th-century Britain, with the many prints made of his works, largely by Ackermann & Co., contributing to their immense popularity.
The present work depicts the celebrated racehorse Lord Lyon (1863-1887), a British thoroughbred who became the third horse ever to win the English Triple Crown in 1866, by winning the Epsom Derby, the 2,000 Guineas Stakes, and the St Leger Stakes, all ridden by his regular jockey Henry Custance (1842-1908). Lord Lyon was the subject for a number of important contemporary equestrian artists, including Harry Hall (c.1814-1882), who painted the horse on several occasions.
