Description
After George Dawe, RA,
British 1781-1829-
Two Portraits: Portrait of Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales; and Portrait of Prince Leopold of Belgium;
hand-coloured mezzotints, the first bearing an old hand-written label inscribed 'Princess Charlotte of Wales / Presented by M Gordon / 27th June 1824 / Coloured by G. Daw. R.A. / Given by him to her' on the backing board, each 17.5 x 14.3 cm., ovals, a pair (2).
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present works depict Prince Leopold I (1790-1865), King of Belgium, and his wife Princess Charlotte of Wales (1796-1817). Princess Charlotte was the highly popular daughter, and only legitimate child, of George IV (1762-1830), whose early death in 1817 at the age of 21 caused great upset, leading in turn to the ascension of Queen Victoria in 1837.
The portrait of Princess Charlotte follows the same composition as a mezzotint by William Say (1768-1834), dating to 1817 [British Museum no.1902,1011.4111], which itself is after a painting by George Dawe, in reverse, and held in the Belgian Royal Collection. A copy of the painting is in the British Royal Collection [RCIN 402491], with minor variations.
The portrait of Prince Leopold is also after a painting by Dawe in the Belgian Royal Collection, with a copy in the British Royal Collection [RCIN 407376], of which a three-quarter-length mezzotint was made by Henry Dawe (1790-1848) [British Museum no.1868,0808.1748].
