Description
John Holland,
British 1830-1886-
View of Gerrard Wood from Tandle Hill, with Middleton in the distance;
oil on canvas, inscribed 'Gerrard Wood, Stakehill, Resivoirs [sic.] &c / Middleton in the Distance / from foot Tandle Hill.' (lower right), indistinctly signed and dated 'J Holland... 1870.' (lower right), 66 x 107 cm.
Provenance:
with J. Davey & Sons, Manchester.
Purchased by the late parents of the present owner in the 1950s.
Note:
This striking and expansive landscape is taken from Tandle Hill, almost exactly in between the towns of Rochdale and Oldham, and approximately 10 miles from the centre of Manchester. The painting illustrates the rapid industrialisation which took place over the course of the 19th century, completely altering the landscape and community in the area, as demonstrated by the chimneys which punctuate the horizon.
A similar view by Holland, 'Crompton from Tandle Hills, Royton, Lancashire', also painted in 1870, is housed at Gallery Oldham in Greater Manchester [no.3.83/36].
