Description
William Calcott Knell,
British 1830-1876-
Fishing boats off the coast at Whitby in the morning;
oil on canvas, signed and dated 'W.C. Knell / 1861[?]' (lower left), 51.5 x 91.2 cm.
Provenance:
with Thomas Agnew & Sons, London;
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
William Callcott Knell was the son of William Adolphus Knell (1805-1875), and, like his father, specialised in painting maritime scenes. Although Knell painted the seas in all weather, he was clearly particularly drawn to the subject of stormy seas, often depicting dramatic, crashing waves in his compositions. Indeed, the present work convincingly evokes the swell of the waves off the Yorkshire coast, with the distinctive ruins of Whitby Abbey visible on the cliffs behind.
