Dürer is perhaps best-known as a prolific printmaker, acting as a pioneer in the medium of engraving and woodcut in late 15th- and early 16th-century Europe. His subject-matter varied widely, ranging from the humble, everyday scenes of the present work, to Biblical compositions, and to the highly complex symbolism of his enigmatic 'master prints', or 'Meisterstiche', of which 'Melencolia I' is perhaps the most striking and celebrated example. Indeed, the present work originates from the same period as Dürer's most important prints, including 'Melencolia I' and 'Saint Jerome in his Study', both from 1514, and his 'Knight, Death, and the Devil', from 1513, the year after his 'The Peasant Couple at Market' was completed.
